Working Hinterland Slopes: Basalt, Red Soil and Rain on the Scenic Rim
Tamborine Mountain, Beechmont, Springbrook and Canungra are steep, wet and rocky. Machine weight, cabs, breakers and the seasons that matter for hinterland earthworks.
Drive up the range from Nerang or Canungra and the Coast disappears. Tamborine Mountain, Beechmont, Springbrook and the Numinbah Valley are old volcanic country: red soil, basalt, rainforest and some of the highest rainfall in Queensland. It is beautiful acreage and demanding earthmoving.
The soil
Krasnozem, the deep red volcanic soil of the plateaus, is rich and free-draining and digs beautifully when moist. Wet, it turns to a slick that rubber tracks slide on. Dry, it is firm but rarely as hard as the clay on the Coast.
The rock
Basalt is the problem. Boulders sit in the soil like plums in a pudding, and solid basalt outcrops at the surface on the ridges. A toothed bucket levers out the boulders; solid rock needs a hydraulic breaker, and a breaker on a 3 tonne machine does in an hour what a 1.5 tonne machine cannot do at all.
The slope
Almost every hinterland block has a gradient. Work straight up and down, keep the blade downhill, widen the tracks and treat fresh cuts as unstable, especially after rain. A cab and ROPS matter more here than anywhere on the Coast.
The rain
Springbrook records more than 3,000 millimetres a year. Drainage is not optional: every driveway needs cross-drains and table drains, every cut needs a diversion above it, and every shed pad needs a swale. Do the drainage first and the rest of the job stays dry.

Driveway construction and repair, shed and house pads, dams and drainage, tree and stump work after storms, fencing on steep boundaries, and the vineyard and orchard work of Tamborine and the Rim.
Machines that suit
The R22 PRO is the entry point for hinterland acreage; the R32 PRO with a cab and zero tail swing is the machine most hinterland contractors end up with, and it carries a breaker that handles basalt. An RS10 skid steer moves gravel and mulch on the flatter blocks. Delivery from Currumbin Waters is about an hour by tilt tray, which for a 3 tonne machine is the sensible way up the range.
